Frequently asked questions

Where do I find the IP address I want to check?
Common places: the 'Received' headers of a suspicious email (use our email header analyzer to extract them), a failed-login alert from one of your accounts, or a firewall/server log entry that looks unfamiliar.
What does AbuseIPDB's abuse confidence score mean?
It's a percentage reflecting how many other security teams have reported abusive activity from that IP recently — things like spam, brute-force login attempts, or scanning. A high score is a real red flag; a score of zero means no reports were found, not that the IP is guaranteed clean.
Why would open ports or vulnerabilities matter for an email or link investigation?
A server riddled with open, unnecessary ports and known unpatched vulnerabilities is a sign of poorly-maintained or purpose-built malicious infrastructure — a useful corroborating signal alongside reputation data.
Can one IP address host both legitimate and malicious sites?
Yes — shared hosting and cloud infrastructure mean a single IP can serve many unrelated domains. A clean IP result doesn't automatically clear every domain on it; pair an IP check with a direct domain or link check for the specific site in question.
